Registration is open for the 2023 Texas Pecan Course

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The 59th Annual Texas Pecan Short Course will be held Jan. 23-26 at Texas A&M University Horticulture Research Center3199 County Road 269 East, about 9 miles west of Texas A&M University, College Station.

The short course will be held every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Registration is now open, but the number of places is limited. The cost is $300, and participants must register at https://tx.ag/2023PecanShortCourse. Lunch will be provided each day and participants should wear clothing and footwear suitable for outdoor activities in the Texas winter.

“The Texas Pecan Short Course will help future pecan growers with the planning, development, business considerations and annual cropping aspects of commercial pecan production,” said Monte Nesbitt, Ph.D., Ph.D. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulture specialist, Bryan-College Station and event coordinator.

“This course is known and respected throughout the pecan industry as a basic training course for new pecan growers,” he said. “The event draws people from across the U.S. as well as around the world.”

Classroom and practical training

The four-day course will cover both classroom instruction and hands-on demonstrations. Nesbit and other experts from Texas A&M Division of Horticultural Sciences will teach the course.

Demonstrations will take place nearby at the Texas A&M University Pecan Orchard, a 56-acre pecan research and teaching orchard with more than 1,500 trees.

Demonstrations will include:

  • Cleaning equipment.
  • Spraying equipment.
  • Planting trees.
  • Training, pruning and grafting.
