Drought hammers sorghum yields in ’22 crop year
The presidents of the nation’s sorghum producers say the historic drought in the Central Plains has caused the lowest yields since hybridization for the crop.
Clint Meeker is mining in South Central Kansas. “This is a testament to how difficult the growing conditions were in the Sorghum Belt.”
During the 2022 National Agricultural Broadcasting Association, he told Brownfield that the industry needs to evaluate drought-tolerant hybrids. “(So we) can advance genetics. I think it’s a great opportunity to look at what’s been successful in a drought and move forward with some of those lines.”
The latest USDA report showed November sorghum production was down nearly 9 million bushels from October to 235.8 million.
