Sheep Sustainability Task Force and Report
A new task force of industry stakeholders and research and extension professionals to develop a report on sheep sustainability

DENVER — The American Lamb Board (ALB), which works with the U.S. sheep industry, has formed a new task force of industry stakeholders and research and extension professionals to develop a report on sustainable sheep development. The report will reflect the sheep industry’s commitment to sustainability and describe the industry’s current practices and goals for continuous improvement in animal care, environmental protection, social impact and industry performance.
The new Sustainability Task Force was developed in part based on the results of a Michigan State University (MSU) environmental impact study. The study identified the best methodology for estimating total greenhouse gas emissions from sheep and created a set of indicators that takes into account the diversity of ways sheep are raised and sold. MSU collected production data and calculated greenhouse gas emissions from 5 different sheep farming systems:
- Intensive production
- Intensive grazing
- Wide pasture
- Range
- Feedlots
The study identified the main production factors contributing to US sheep GHG emissions, which will guide the development of mitigation strategies and best practices for each production system to reduce emissions.
