Lyft, Motional launches robot taxi service in Los Angeles

Lyft and self-driving technology firm Motional said Thursday that Los Angeles residents will be able to book a robotaxi on the ride-hailing company’s app, but did not say when the service would be available.

Tight regulatory controls and delays in the commercial adoption of autonomous vehicle technology have delayed the rollout of robotaxi services, causing investors to worry.

Los Angeles will become the second city after Las Vegas where companies will offer self-driving taxi services.

Motional, which uses Hyundai Motor Co’s IONIQ5 electric car for its robotaxi service, is a joint venture between the South Korean manufacturer and automotive technology company Aptiv.

The autonomous vehicle company also has a 10-year agreement with Uber Technologies Inc to supply self-driving cars.

Last week, competitor Waymo launched its autonomous ride-hailing service in Phoenix, Arizona.
