Being’s World Air Cargo Forecast 2022 predicts a doubling of demand over the next 20 years

Boeing has released its latest two-year World Air Cargo Forecast (WACF), in which it predicts both a 60% expansion in the global cargo fleet and a doubling of cargo traffic over the next 20 years. This is equal to 2,800 converted and specially built aircraft by 2041.

The US planemaker is also seeing strong demand for its 777-8 Freighter as carriers look to switch to more fuel-efficient and sustainable jets. The company also predicts that of those 2,800 aircraft, roughly one-third will be new jets and 66% will be retrofits of existing aircraft such as the 737-800 BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter).

Boeing sees the biggest growth in demand in the Asia-Pacific region, where its share will reach 40% of new and refurbished cargo planes. Overall, taking into account the replacement of aircraft, it is projected that by 2041, the size of the global fleet of cargo ships will reach 3,600 jet aircraft.

“While the air cargo market is returning to a more normal pace after the historic demand of the past two years, structural factors, including the growth of the express network, the development of supply chain strategies and new entrants to the cargo market, are contributing to sustained demand for cargo transportation” , — said Darren Hulst, Boeing’s vice president of commercial marketing. “In the global transportation network, air carriers will continue to be a critical factor in moving high-value goods in larger volumes in expanding markets.”
