BOTTINEAU, ND – Harvest season is upon the Bottineau community and it was no different at the Dakota College Greenhouse. During the harvest season, the greenhouse has various gardens and high tunnels from which to harvest. This year they have harvested apples, peppers, carrots, tomatoes, radishes, beets, squash, cantaloupe, green beans, zucchini, garlic, cucumbers, lettuce and kohlrabi. This is a common occurrence for Dakota College during harvest season. They sell their products to college staff and faculty, community members, and to the Sodexo campus dining center.
Every year, the greenhouse hosts a Pumpkins in the Park event for children in the community and surrounding area. The mini pumpkins are grown on campus in their own pumpkin patch southeast of the washing and packing plant. On September 28, the Pickering Boosters 4H club, which included twenty students, helped pick pumpkins. Karen Anderson, who is a 4H leader, said “they had a blast and said they would like to do it again next year.”
According to Lynn Nero, manager of the Dakota College Greenhouse, students helped harvest about nine hundred mini pumpkins for the event. “I loved the giggles and laughter between all the kids. They were not afraid to have fun and dig in the dirt,” says Nero. The Greenhouse will be reaching out to the Pickering Boosters 4H Club again in the future to help with other projects!
