According to CNN, on February 15, 2022, American fighters rose to escort several Russian aircraft in eastern Syria.
The report cites two U.S. officials who are directly aware of the incident who said a Russian cargo plane and two Tu-22 Backfire bombers flew into an area known as Eastern Syria’s security zone. According to the article, the plane did not inform the US-led coalition that they were flying through the area.
The report goes on to say that when the U.S. told the Russians it needed further notice, Russian aviation said they were continuing. American F-16s and other coalition planes flew near Russian planes for a short time until they left the area, CNN reports.
U.S. sources told CNN that the incident was not considered related to escalating tensions with Russia over Ukraine.
