United Airlines has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for three weekly nonstop flights between Washington, D.C., and Cape Town, South Africa. If approved, United flights will be the first non-stop flight between Washington and the South African capital, Cape Town.
This long-baked route will benefit important links between the government and enhance communication and trade with a region that has strong cultural ties to South Africa. The proposed United service will begin on November 17, 2022 and will operate on Boeing 787-9 aircraft, maximally meet consumer demand and benefit travelers from the United States and South Africa. If approved, flights between Dulles and Cape Town will connect 55 U.S. cities with Cape Town, accounting for more than 90% of all U.S. demand for travel to Cape Town. The Washington Dulles Hub is the gateway to the nation’s capital and elsewhere, daily operating more than 230 flights to nearly 100 destinations around the world – including more than ten world capitals and new services to Accra, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria.
