Two Malian soldiers killed in a jihadist attack

Two Malian soldiers were killed on Sunday morning in northern Mali in an attack on their jihadist post, the army said on social media.

An “armed terrorist group” attacked the Niafunke post in the early hours, the military said, using a term commonly used to refer to jihadists.

“The death toll is two from the FAMa (Malian Armed Forces) and five from the attackers,” he added.

The deaths are the first reported by the Malian army in a January 5 report of six deaths during clashes in November and December.

Meanwhile, the Malian army has claimed the deaths of dozens of jihadists and the destruction of several of their bases since the launch of Operation Keletigui in December.

Mali is fighting to control a jihadist insurgency that first appeared in 2012 and since then spread to neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.

Since then, the country has been increasingly in conflict with its international partners the army took power in the state of Sahel in 2020removal of the President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. Two Malian soldiers killed in a jihadist attack
