The USDA begins the 2022 census

On Tuesday, the Department of Agriculture sent out survey codes to all farmers and ranchers in the country inviting them to participate in the 2022 Census of Agriculture.

The Ag Census, conducted every five years, provides detailed data on U.S. agriculture down to the county level. All business operations with at least $1,000 in agricultural sales in 2022 are included in the census.

Paper questionnaires will be sent to manufacturers in December. Farmers and ranchers can complete the questionnaire online or return the questionnaire by email. Both online and mailed responses are due by February 6.

The online version includes time-saving features, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The 2022 survey has new questions on the use of precision agriculture, hemp production, sheep and internet access.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the census “is a powerful voice for American agriculture. The information gathered from the agricultural census influences policy decisions that will have a tremendous impact on agricultural producers and their communities for years to come.”

The results should be published in early 2024.

Manufacturers are required by law to respond to the survey, and NASS must keep the information they provide confidential.
