The United States is deploying additional troops in Europe

The United States has agreed to deploy additional troops in Europe as Russia continues to build up military forces around Ukraine’s border, raising fears of a possible invasion.

According to Fr. Statement by the US Department of Defenseanother 3,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division will soon be transferred to Europe.

The 82nd Airborne Division is based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Earlier this month, the U.S. announced it would move around 3,000 troops to Romania, Poland and Germany.

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the decision to increase the deployment was made after further signs of escalation across the Russian-Ukrainian border.

A senior defense official told Defense Ministry journalist Jim Haramon: “This second tranche of airborne troops will join Poland in the first tranche of 1,700 troops and key assets that Minister Austin ordered there on 2 February.

“Almost two-thirds of this first tranche has already been received.”

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III temporarily relocated 160 members of the Florida National Guard to Ukraine. Participants have been in the country since late November to train the Ukrainian armed forces.

In a written statement, Pentagon spokesman John F. Kirby said: “They are leaving Ukraine and moving to other European countries.

“The Secretary made this decision with great caution, bearing in mind first and foremost the safety and security of our personnel, and on the basis of instructions from the State Department on American personnel in Ukraine.”

There are now more than 80,000 US troops in Europe.
