The southeast Iowa farmer hopes to start harvesting soon

A southeast Iowa farmer says some growers in his part of the state are harvesting corn, while others are still days away.

Logan Lyon, a director of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, grows corn and soybeans in Muscatine and Scott counties. “We’ve had people call and say it’s still greener than a gourd out there,” he said. “And there are people who say they get excited very quickly.”

He tells them that farmers in his area are cautiously optimistic about this year’s harvest. “I think people are a little too shy to commit to what’s out there until the combines come through,” Lyon said. “That’s the nature of a farmer and a grower.”

While parts of Iowa faced drought challenges this growing season, Lyon says they were fortunate to have good summer conditions.
