The Russian fleet began major Black Sea exercises

Russia’s navy began large-scale exercises in the Black Sea on Saturday, even as Moscow rejected as “hysterical” a U.S. warning that Russia’s attack on Ukraine could begin in a few days.

“More than 30 ships of the Black Sea Fleet went to sea from Sevastopol and Novorossiysk in accordance with the exercise plan,” – said on Saturday morning.

“The purpose of the exercise is to protect the coast of the Crimean peninsula, bases of the Black Sea Fleet, as well as the economic sector of the country … from possible military threats,” – added in the ministry.

The move came after the United States on Friday issued the harshest warning of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, saying it could happen “any day.”

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that such an attack is likely to begin with air strikes and missile strikes, and urged Americans in Ukraine to leave the country “as soon as possible.”

A number of EU countries have also called on their citizens to leave Ukraine.

Moscow despised US warnings.

“The hysteria of the White House is more indicative than ever. The Anglo-Saxons need war. At any cost. Provocations, misinformation and threats are their favorite methods of solving their own problems, ”Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote in the Telegram.

Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, told Newsweek that the US warnings were “alarming” and reiterated that his country “is not going to attack anyone.”

In recent months, Russia has created tens of thousands of troops along Ukraine’s borders, raising fears it plans to invade its former Soviet neighbor eight years after it seized the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine.

Russia denies any such plans, citing a number of Western demands, including banning Ukraine from joining NATO’s Western Defense Alliance.

In the midst of the sensation last month, Russia announced a series of naval exercises in the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in “waters and seas adjacent to Russia.”

The exercises involve more than 140 warships and support vessels, more than 60 aircraft, 1,000 units of military equipment and more than 10,000 servicemen, the defense ministry said on Saturday.

Tensions have risen in the Black Sea in recent years, with Moscow accusing Ukraine’s pro-Western government and Western powers of threatening its security in Crimea.

Last June, Russian troops fired a warning shot at a British destroyer, which they accused of entering its waters, allegations that the UK denies.

Along with naval exercises, large-scale military exercises are being conducted by Russia with the country’s authoritarian ally Belarus, which is located north of Ukraine and also borders the European Union. The Russian fleet began major Black Sea exercises
