Shopeee-commerce giant Sea Limited, based in Singapore, said Fr. 600% jump in the number of local vendors in Brazil – today the Shopee market has more than 1 million Brazilian sellers. That means more than that 85% of Shopee sales in the country are local.

According to Shopee, the range of sellers earning from 1,000 to 5,000 rubles a month has grown by 50%. In addition, orders for local sellers, who sold for the first time in 2021, increased by 40%.

Leila Carcagnoli, Shopee’s business development manager, said the company’s goal is to increasingly strengthen its local business through a platform that connects millions of consumers. “Through these Brazilian stores, Shopee offers easy access to a wide range of local products,” she said.

Shopee’s strategy of investing in local sellers is justified: stay competitive and grow Latin Americamore and more international platforms are relying on a hybrid strategy that combines the operational effectiveness of a global brand with local vendors such as Amazon and AliExpress.

The Outside 2021/2022 A study published by Brazilian tech company EBANX, which also owns LABS, shows that hybridizing retail markets is expanding the range of products offered on the platforms, attracting small and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs to the digital world. According to Beyond Borders analysis, the strategy allows global and local players to compete with each other for the preferences of Hispanics.

The report examined the full range of products offered by six different trading platforms Brazil (half of them international and half local) at the beginning of September 2021 – AliExpress, Shopee, Amazon, Free Market, Americansand Casas Bahia – by reviewing the products from the first 100 pages on each site and dividing the products and sellers into domestic and international.

In total, this analysis included more than 750,000 items sold to more than 230,000 vendors. At this point, the data showed that this trend of hybridization is definitely stronger in international markets. The share of Brazilian sellers on these platforms in general reaches 28% – and, most importantly, local sellers are already responsible for 64% of the products available to a Brazilian customer.

Among local markets, the share of international sellers is small and is less than 1% overall, although they already account for 8% of the products offered by the three players considered in this analysis. However, recent partnerships announced by companies such as Via (parent company Casas Bahia) and Americanas are aimed at expanding their international offerings and have the potential to change that in the short term.
