The Multipurpose Information Distribution System – Low Volume Terminal Unit Upgrade 2 (MIDS-LVT BU2) has been qualified for use on all four Boeing E-3F Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft of the French Air Force.

The new terminal, announced by France’s General Directorate of Armaments (DGA) on September 22, will enable the operation of the latest generation Link 16 military tactical data network on its aircraft from September to November 2022.

In 2020, Thales and Air France Industries have been selected to integrate the new MIDS-LVT BU2 terminal into the French E-3F AWACS, it said.

DGA conducted two years of testing to qualify the terminal, together with the French Air Force and two industrial partners. Specifically, DGA’s Information Examination and Testing Center handled information systems security, while DGA’s Project Engineering Center examined flight authorization files, temporary work authorization, and the qualification of MIDS-LVT BU2 integration into AWACS. Several flights were conducted by the DGA Flight Test Center, which tested the integration and operation of the terminal, the DGA said.
