The carousel milking parlor alleviates work problems for the Illinois dairy farmer
Investing in a new carousel milking parlor has increased efficiency and alleviated labor shortages on a dairy farm in southern Illinois.
Nick Harre of Nashville, IL tells Brownfield that they moved out of their old salon in mid-December and that it was a smooth transition for cows and employees.
“It allows us to milk 180-250 cows per hour, with almost 3 hours less time per milking per day compared to our old system.”
He says that the increase in the labor shortage in recent years is the main reason why they built the salon.
“Finding people who want to do the physical work required of them on a dairy farm is becoming more and more difficult. So the only way to keep up with the size of the operation is to be more efficient on the labor front, and an investment like this will definitely help us get there. ”
Harre says it didn’t take long to see obvious savings on the labor side of the rotating-style salon, which is one of the few in the state.
