The British Challenger 3 tank will receive an Israeli laser warning system

Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) has contractual Elbit Systems UK will provide 150 Elbit Laser Warning Systems (ELAWS) for the Challenger 3 (CR3) programme.

ELAWS provides 360-degree coverage with accurate and timely warning of laser-guided threats such as missiles.

Accurate threat detection

It detects and identifies laser sources such as “rangefinders, pointers, beam raiders, infrared illuminators and simulators” and pinpoints radar/RF sources, Elbit Systems explained.

The system enables seamless integration with various countermeasures and in-vehicle training. It comes with a built-in test platform.

“We are committed to ensuring UK Armed Forces personnel are properly equipped and protected against an ever-changing threat spectrum and we will continue to support all phases of this program from a number of our sites across the UK,” said Elbit Systems UK CEO. Martin Fawcett said.

Challenger 3 update

RBSL bldg signed an 800 million pound ($1.13 billion) contract. in 2021 to upgrade 148 British Army Challenger 2 tanks by 2027.

Modernization of the Cold War-era platform includes a new L55 120mm smoothbore gun, a turret for better crew protection, improved surveillance, target acquisition and digital battlefield communications.
