South Africa has contracted Saab to support the Gripen

South Africa has signed a three-year support agreement with Saab that will address availability issues for the Gripen C/D fleet. (Janes/Patrick Allen)

South Africa has awarded a three-year support contract to Saab for some of its fleet of Gripen C/D combat aircraft.

Announced by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) on September 19, the ZAR 532 million ($30 million) deal covers service, repair, maintenance and minor upgrades to the South African Air Force’s (SAAF) Gripen C/D fleet. in operation since 2008. The contract is designed for 2022-2025.

While the SAAF officially lists 17 single-seat Gripen Cs and nine two-seat Gripen Ds in its inventory, the two aircraft have been described as beyond repair.
