Shell is making its first SAF delivery to Singapore

Shell is the first fuel supplier to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Singapore, the company announced this week during the Singapore Air Show. SAF, a critical pillar in the aviation industry’s ambitions for sustainable development, is now approved for use in blends of up to 50 percent with conventional jet fuel. In its neat or 100 percent form, it can reduce life cycle emissions by up to 80 percent over a lifetime compared to fossil fuels.

While the first batch of Neste SAF production was mixed in Europe, it will test and verify the supply chain created by the company in Asia. Subsequent batches will be mixed in the country at the Shell plant in Singapore, which has been upgraded. According to the fuel company, the presence of mixing in the region will allow more efficient operation, allowing pure SAF to be moved in bulk from production sources and then delivering mixed SAF to where it is needed.

Shell is also developing plans to build a biofuel plant at its energy and chemical park in Singapore, which if completed will be able to produce 550,000 tonnes of low-carbon fuel a year. “Along with investing in our SAF production capabilities, we are also focused on developing the regional infrastructure needed to supply fuel to our customers in their key locations,” said Shell Aviation World President Jan Toshko.
