St. PAUL, Minn. — Many people are interested in starting a sheep and goat business and ask what loan programs and grant opportunities are available to help new and beginning farmers. Join the University of Minnesota Sheep and Goat Extension team and invited guests from the Farm Service Agency, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, Natural Resources Conservation Service to explore new and emerging farm programs during a free webinar on Tuesday , October. 11.02.2022, starting at 19.00.

Aspiring farmers, 4-Hers, agricultural lenders and business professionals who work with farmers, as well as those interested in sheep and goats, are invited to attend.

Demand for lamb and mutton increased significantly after World War II, along with higher market prices in the last few years, increasing the profit potential for sheep and goat farmers. Many beginning farmers interested in raising livestock start with sheep and goats.

“Smaller animals are sometimes easier to handle,” says Colin Carlson, a professor at the University of Minnesota, “and with proper management, small acreage farmers can often grow enough forage and provide adequate conditions for small herds.”

Join an excellent educational session from credit and grant agencies to find out what loans and grants are available for beginning farmers and how to invest in sheep and goat farming.

Pre-registration is mandatory. Register at the address https://z.umn.edu/beginsheepgoat and you will receive a Zoom link after registration. If you are unable to attend the live session, you will receive a recording via email. If you have any questions, please contact Brenda Miller at nels4220@umn.edu or Colin Carlson on traxl042@umn.edu.
