SCG chemicals plc (SCGC; Bangkok, Thailand) recently invested in new technology and equipment at Sirplaste in Portugal following the acquisition of 70% of Sirplaste-Sociedade Industrial de Recuperados de Plástico, SA (Sirplaste) through SCG Chemicals Trading (Singapore) PTE in April 2022. This investment is to expand the production capacity of recycled high density polyethylene or high quality recycled resin (PCR) by 9,000 tons per year, or 25% of the current total production capacity. As a result, by the second quarter of 2023, Sirplaste’s total PCR production capacity will be more than 45,000 tons per year. The aim is to meet the ever-growing market demand in Europe and Africa. This strengthens Portugal’s position as a leader in PCR and is in line with SCGC’s corporate strategy “Chemical business for sustainable development”.
Tanawong Arieratchakul, Chief Executive Officer and President of SCGC, said: “SCGC has a clear green polymer business strategy that addresses the market’s need for sustainability. The decision to invest in new technology and equipment at Sirplaste in Portugal is now designed to strengthen the business of producing high-quality recycled resins or PCR and expand the commercial potential to become more competitive in the global market.’
SCGC is committed to increasing resource efficiency in accordance with circular economy principles to increase the total sales volume of the green polymer portfolio to one million tons annually by 2030. It also includes recycled resin (PCR) products to support growing customers. demand, especially among major global brands that have declared their commitment to sustainable business practices and are promoting recycling and the use of PCR in product packaging, especially in the household and personal care segment. As a result, demand for green packaging may increase in the long term, especially in European markets.
Ricardo Pereira, CEO of Sirplaste, stated: “Our annual production capacity is currently 36,000 tonnes. This enterprise is an excellent starting point for increasing the annual production capacity by 25%, or 45,000 tons. In the future, there are plans to continuously increase production capacity to support the expanding green packaging market in the long term. This serves to strengthen Sirplaste’s commitment to European customers and strengthens our position as a leader in the recycled plastics industry in Portugal.”
