Russia’s Defense Ministry claims that a U.S. Navy submarine was spotted near the Kuril Islands in Russian territorial waters.
According to the ministry, the invasion took place on the morning of February 12, 2022. At this time, anti-submarine aircraft IL-38 and IL-38N May Naval Aviation of the Pacific Fleet conducted an exercise in the area of the village of Avachanskaya Guba in mainland Russia.
The training included locating and tracking Pacific Fleet submarines that acted as imitators of the aggressors. It was during this exercise that an unscheduled meeting took place.
“A group of the Pacific Fleet during an exercise near the Kuril Islands found a submarine, most likely from the United States,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said during a hearing with President Vladimir Putin, TASS reported.
The ship, which the Russian military believes is a Virginia-class nuclear submarine, was near the island of Urup. On an uninhabited island is a landfill used by Russian strike aircraft.
Detecting the submarine, the Russian Navy sent audible warnings in Russian and English to inform the submarine crew that it had entered national waters. At least one Kama Ka-27 Helix helicopter and a Marshal Shapashnikov anti-submarine destroyer chased after the attacker, who allegedly launched an acoustic decoy before leaving the area at high speed.
“As a result of the effort, which took almost three hours, the submarine was diverted from Russian waters, where it was more than 4 kilometers inside,” – said Shoigu.
The incident is denied by the US Department of Defense. “We are aware of press reports of an alleged naval incident in the Pacific,” a Pentagon spokesman told AFP. “At this time, we are unable to confirm the details of these reports.”
The military attache of the US Embassy in Moscow was summoned and received an official diplomatic letter in which the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that it “reserves the right to take all necessary measures to ensure security in Russia’s territorial waters to ensure Russia’s security.”
