According to new data, Australians consume more potatoes than ever before. How Megan Hughes reports for The rural alphabetHort Innovation research and development statistics show that 87 percent of Australian families bought potatoes at the supermarket, taking home an average of 1.7 pounds per shopping trip.
The head of the data and ideas group, Adam Briggs, said consumers not only bought champignons at the checkout, but also ordered them while eating.
“About 15 percent of the harvest went to service to cover things like fast food restaurants, and you know other convenient options like catering,” he said.
Most of the potatoes grown in Australia remained in the country, and only 3 per cent were exported last year. While this may seem like a small figure, it is 40,000 tons, valued at $ 31 million.
