Minnesota US Senator Introduces Rural Home Preservation Strategy and Investments Act

One of the impediments to increasing the agricultural workforce is access to affordable rural housing.

U.S. Sen. Tina Smith says this is addressed in the Rural Housing Preservation Strategy and Investments Act of 2022 that she recently introduced.

“Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been talking to a lot of agricultural groups and a lot of them are talking to me about the issues with the lack of labor and then the lack of housing for the people that they need to do their jobs. “

The Minnesota Democrat tells Brownfield that the bill provides rental assistance tools for residents in down payment or aging properties who are at risk of losing their homes.

“It’s complicated. There are a lot of issues at play with the lack of affordable housing in rural communities.”

Smith chairs the Senate’s subcommittee on housing, transportation and community development, and says a companion bill has already passed the House and hopes her legislation will pass the Senate next year.
