EAST LANSING, MI – Michigan honey production in 2022 was 3.36 million pounds, down 34 percent from 2021. This estimate included honey from producers with 5 or more colonies. In 2022, Michigan ranked ninth in honey production. Michigan’s 82,000 honey-producing colonies averaged 41 pounds in 2022, down 10 pounds from the previous year.

Honey prices in Michigan averaged $3.04 per pound, up 4 cents per pound from last year. Production cost was $10.2 million, down 33 percent from 2021. Honey stocks amounted to 706 thousand pounds, which is 64 percent less than in 2021.

In 2022, the country’s total honey production was 125 million pounds, which is 1 percent less than in 2021. In 2022, there were 2.67 million colonies producing honey, down 1 percent from 2021. Yield per colony averaged 47.0 pounds, unchanged from 2021. Colonies that produced honey were more than one state in each state where honey was produced. Therefore, at the United States level, colony productivity may be understated, but overall production will not be affected. Colonies were not included unless honey was collected. Producer stocks of honey totaled 23.3 million pounds on December 15, 2022, down 1 percent from a year earlier. Inventory held by manufacturers excludes inventory held under the merchandise credit program.

Honey prices in the United States rose 12 percent during 2022 to $2.96 per pound, up from $2.65 per pound in 2021. Prices at the US and state levels reflect portions of honey sold through cooperative, private, and retail channels. Prices for each color grade are derived by weighting the quantity sold for each marketing channel. Prices for the 2021 crop reflect honey sold in 2021 and 2022. Some of the 2021 crop honey was sold in 2022, leading to some price revisions for the 2021 crop.
