Mercedes is recalling nearly 1,000 vehicles due to the risk of fire

Mercedes is recalling 966 vehicles in Vietnam due to a fire risk linked to an electrical short in the trunk control modules and faulty rear door trim strips.

The recall affects three models – the C300, GLE and GLS – imported through official channels into Vietnam. Of these, 126 recalled Mercedes C300 vehicles were manufactured between May 2021 and May 2022.

The remaining 840 units – the GLE 450 4Matic, GLS 450 4Matic, GLS Maybach 480 4Matic and GLS Maybach 600 4Matic – were produced between July 2019 and January 2022.

In the C300 model (W206 generation), there is a risk of rainwater entering the rear of the trunk. As a result, moisture can penetrate the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM module) in the trunk, the automaker said.

In this case, a short circuit may occur in the control modules, and the risk of fire cannot be completely eliminated. In addition, a short circuit can lead to various other problems such as damage to the tail light. The company recalled the vehicles to install a waterproof cover on the module that receives the signal and activates it to prevent problems.

The GLE and GLS models are being recalled to repair the trim strip in the triangular window (rear door) because it may not meet specification due to deviations in the assembly process. As a result, the trim strips can detach from the vehicle while driving, potentially causing accidents or injuries to other road users.

The above models are recalled in the system of authorized Mercedes Vietnam dealers nationwide, and repairs are carried out free of charge. Fixing an error on the C300 takes about 60 minutes, and the procedures for the other lines take about half that time. The recall program will run from November 10, 2022 to December 31, 2027.

Mercedes Vietnam said it will also provide free troubleshooting support for C300, GLE and GLS models not imported through official channels that are on Mercedes AG’s global recall list.
