A Mississippi State University Extension Service irrigation specialist has received national recognition for his work related to water conservation practices.

Drew Golson received the Early Career Award in Extension, Engagement and Outreach from the Council of Universities on Water Resources during the organization’s annual national conference in June.

Golson, a state irrigation specialist, works at the MSU Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville. He is a scientist at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and serves as the MSU Coordinator for the National Alluvial Aquifer Research Center.

Gholson developed a program that trains MSU Extension county agents to conduct on-farm demonstrations of soil moisture sensors for growers. More than 25 demonstrations offer growers a learning experience throughout the season. Participants reported a 100% increase in knowledge of sensor readings and irrigation timing decisions.

Jason Krutzdirector of the Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute at MSU, said Golson recently received an Outstanding Grants Award from MSU Extension in recognition of his success in obtaining grant funding through various agencies.

“Dr. Golson is a skilled team leader who interacts and interacts effectively with a wide range of county extension agents, professionals, farmers and agencies,” Krutz said. “He has received more than $6 million from state and national funding agencies as a principal or co-principal investigator to support his extension and research programs.”

Since he joined MSU Extension in 2019, Golson has spoken at more than 100 Extension workshops, producer meetings and agent training events, and has given 34 invited or oral presentations at conferences on topics such as private wells , water quality, water conservation and irrigation management. .
