India Launches Mountain Warfare Light Tank Project: Report

The Indian Army has selected Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to jointly develop the country’s first light tank project with the Defense Research and Development Organisation, Janes informedciting a company representative.

The Army has selected a Mumbai-headquartered multinational company to develop a 25-ton mountain warfare tank under Project Zorawar, L&T’s senior executive vice president for defense Jayant D Patil told on the way out.

The prototype is expected to be presented by the end of 2023.

A long search for a light tank

The service has been seeking a light tank since 2009, when two new mountain divisions were created, Print wrote.

The standoff on the Chinese border in 2020 hastened the process, leading to talks between the Army and L&T on a project to convert the 155mm K9 self-propelled howitzer into a 35-tonne tank.

In March 2021, the Ministry of Defense of India issued a request for 350 light tanks of the 25-ton category.

Probable features

New Indian Express informed that the tank will be a “light mobile platform with a high power-to-weight ratio with significant firepower” including “artificial intelligence, drone integration, an active defense system, a high degree of situational awareness.”

Meanwhile, Patila told Janes the company has been selected for the development phase of the project, and a decision on a partnership for the production phase has not yet been made.

“The developed equipment must undergo field evaluation tests and be successful for induction clearance, and then [the] the production order process is starting,” he added. India Launches Mountain Warfare Light Tank Project: Report
