Farm groups are calling on the Senate to confirm the nominations of McKalip and Taylor
Farm groups across the country are calling on Congress to confirm nominees for two key agriculture positions before the end of the year.
Brian Kuehl, executive director of Farmers for Free Trade, says a letter this week is asking Senate leaders to confirm Doug McKalip as the U.S. Trade Representative’s chief agriculture negotiator and Alexis Taylor as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Commerce and Foreign Affairs. USDA Agricultural Business.
“While our competitors, Australia or the EU, are doing (commercial) deals, we don’t have a team on the ground,” Kuehl said. “We have half a team at best.”
Bill Northey of the Iowa Agribusiness Association tells Brownfield he’s concerned the positions have been vacant for two years.
“If somebody isn’t confirmed by the end of December and a new Congress comes in January, I think people need to be renominated,” Northey said. “Sometimes they have to resubmit and go through hearings again.”
In the letter, the groups say American agriculture needs experienced leaders to represent farmers in international negotiations.
