Fall Fertilizer Considerations

Farmers are firming up their fall fertilizer application plans.

Nutrien senior agronomist Alan Blaylock says it’s important to consider how much the crop has been removed at harvest.

“That can be a factor, for example, in P&K applications, if we’ve had a really good crop (and removed a lot more, we might want to look at replacing it. Or if we’ve had a poor crop because of drought or anything else and we haven’t removed that much, that can be included in our budget for next year.”

For nitrogen, he says brownfield crop rotation and available credits come into play.

“We want to think about the timing of that application, what’s appropriate, what they can do this fall, if anything, (and) what needs to happen in the spring.”

Blaylock says the other aspect of fall fertilizer that is probably most important right now is cost. Fall Fertilizer Considerations – Brownfield Ag News
