Today CABI launched a new product— Trim the app index—Aims to pave the way for a smoother path to existing agricultural decision support tools to help guide plant health issues.

The free access to the Crop App Index was developed by CABI as part of it PlantwisePlus A program that aims to improve livelihoods by supporting the production of safer and better quality food through sustainable approaches to crop production.

Several categories

The recently launched website contains a filtered catalog of existing health-related crops mobile applications and websites along with information about their content and a link to the website or app store. Categories by which users, including Plantwise physicians, other expansion workers, agri-farmers, and other stakeholders, can search the Crop App Index include identifying pests and plant diseases, fertilizer recommendations, exploration, and market access.

Digital tools are very useful in agricultural advisory services and in providing relevant information to farmers and agricultural service providers. The Crop App Index will make it easier for users to access key information such as pesticide options and pesticide calculators.

The best search capabilities

Rob Reader, plant support manager at PlantwisePlus, said: “There are hundreds of digital support tools – apps or web applications – that can help with crop production, but before they were hard to find and hard to find in one center.

“CABI conducted a landscape analysis of these tools, and this work found out the difficulties that arise when searching for such tools, in particular, narrowing the search results to those related to crop production in app stores.

“Both Google and Apple allow the use of filters to narrow the results, but these filters are common and not related to crop production. This emphasizes the need for better ways to search crop production applications and led to the development of the Crop App Index website ”.

Lots of products in stock

The Crop App Index is just one of many products available from CABI Publishing, which also includes the CABI BioProtection portal – a free tool for raising awareness and mastering biocontrol products and biopesticides by manufacturers and consultants – and Plantwise Bank Knowledge Bank, which provides open access extensive global coverage of pests, diseases, weeds and their natural enemies crops who are their hosts, and the countries in which they meet.
