Covestro AG (Leverkusen, Germany) has launched the production of Premodur 15 prepolymers at its Spanish site in Barcelona. With this new production line, the company meets the growing demand for its high-performance elastomers and can cater to an ever-widening range of highly demanding applications.
“Through these strategic investments, Covestro seeks to further increase capacity and increase the reliability of its global supply of Desmodur 15-based products,” says Philip Bucke, Head of Operations at Covestro Elastomers.
“In addition to meeting the demand of our customers, the Covestro site in Barcelona from the beginning of 2022 is fully powered by renewable energy sources,” says Sucheta Govil, Covestro’s Commercial Director. “This approach is part of our ambition to reduce our environmental impact by offering our customers more access to our solutions and specialty products.”
“We are opening a new production unit for our Desmodur 15 prepolymers in Barcelona in parallel with the continuous expansion of our NDI capacity in the Asia-Pacific region through the Map Ta Phut plant in Thailand,” explains Thomas Braig, Head of Covestro Elastomers. “This new production unit will help us support the growth of our customers in the high-end polyurethane application segment.” The abbreviation NDI stands for naphthylene diisocyanate.
“Thanks to this new production line, our Vulkollan licensees, as processors of Desmodur 15 prepolymers, will be able to further develop their business,” explains Abdel Archzaf, Head of NDI-Vulkollan. “Through these investments, we intend to support the demand for ultra-high-performance elastomers used for the highest applications, for example, in the materials processing industry, as well as for a growing number of engineering applications.”
Combining high mechanical properties with dynamic bearing capacity, Desmodur 15 prepolymer-based elastomers are not only one of the most powerful cast polyurethanes on the market, they are also as easy to handle as conventional prepolymers.
