Atec will supply power management systems for the British Challenger 3 MBT

The joint venture of Rheinmetall and BAE Systems RBSL has awarded Atec Engineering Solutions is a subcontractor for the supply of power management systems to the British Army.

The agreement is part of the UK Ministry of Defense initiative to support the British Army’s upgraded Challenger 3 main battle tank (MBT).

Atec will work on the €8 million ($8 million) contract over six years at the company’s Manchester facility.

The RBSL order includes the enclosure contractor panel, enclosure junction box and main battery switch box.

With the components, Challenger 3 can operate with shielded power supplies that complement its size and improve its power management and distribution system, RBSL said.

“This contract is the latest in a series of UK supplier contracts awarded by RBSL for Challenger 3, ensuring the program uses the best of British engineering and manufacturing, and supports valuable skills across the country,” said the RBSL managing director. Colin McClean said.

“This is a significant and vital capability upgrade for the Challenger 3 and is fully in line with our business strategy to extend our support to the UK MoD,” said Atec Engineering Solutions Managing Director. John Bowden said.

RBSL and Atec signed the contract during DVD exhibitionbiennial defense industry convention at UTAC Millbrook, Bedfordshire.

Support of local communities

The contract provides for the training of additional specialists at Atec and further recruitment to the firm, planned for the next three years.

“Awarding this contract provides Atec with the opportunity to expand our land management capabilities and provides further long-term security for the business and its employees,” explained Bowden.

“Like in the UK [Small to Medium-Size Enterprise]participation in this project will strengthen our role in the social value agenda, with increased recruitment and the ability to support our local communities with careers, work experience and apprenticeships.’
