Avolon, an Ireland-based aircraft lessor and lease management service provider, has announced that AirAsia Aviation Group (AirAsia) has signed an optional memorandum to lease at least 100 vertical vertical takeoffs and landings of VOL4 (eVT) aircraft. Air Asia seeks to change air travel in the Southeast Asia region by providing air mobility to the new passenger base.
Through its investment and innovation subsidiary Avalon-e, Avolon will also work with AirAsia to develop the zero-emission eVTOL platform in Southeast Asia, a leader in the urban air mobility (UAM) industry. The two companies intend to set up a working group focused on obtaining local certification as well as researching market opportunities and infrastructure needs for UAM. Along with Avolon AirAsia will also develop its AirAsia Super App to create a platform for travel sharing. When Brazilian Gol and Grupo Comporte ordered 250 vertical aerospace eVTOLs, Japan Airlines ordered 100, and now AirAsia has ordered 100, Avolon has placed 90% of the 500 eVTOL VX4s it agreed to acquire at Vertical Aerospace in June 2021.
The VX4 with four passengers and one pilot should develop a speed of up to 200 miles per hour with a range of more than 100 miles. It will be almost silent in flight, produce zero emissions during operation and offer a low cost per passenger mile. Tony Fernandez, CEO of Capital A, commented: “Innovation has always been in our DNA, and the use of technology to find more efficient and sustainable ways of doing business is a major focus at Capital A (formerly AirAsia Group). Domnal Slattery, CEO of Avolon, commented: “Tony Fernandez is an aviation pioneer who has made AirAsia one of the world’s leading airlines and has now also created the fastest growing in South East Asia travel-related Super App. We are excited to partner with AirAsia, who share our vision of a revolution in the future of air travel.
